The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max reviews are out, and the verdict is fairly consistent: real gains in manual camera exposure control and image quality, at a hundred dollars more than the 17 Pro, with storage tiers that push the price further still. Apple also published a technical breakdown of how its new Reference Image camera mode establishes a chain of trust, starting at the point of manufacture.
The foldable commentary landed the same week, and it’s less kind. Early word on the iPhone Duo describes a squat, tablet-like outer display as a real compromise, with doubts about whether a book-shaped foldable has broad appeal at all. One critique compared its right-side interface bias to how an actual book behaves, which is either a clever observation or a sign the form factor still hasn’t found its footing.
Layer in the report that Apple is building its own AI servers around M8 Ultra chips connected over Nvidia’s NVLink Fusion, with plans to sell them to developers, and a picture starts to form. Apple’s hardware instincts are still sharp on cameras and trust architecture. Its answer to the assistant race and to foldables both look like a company working out loud rather than shipping from conviction.
