Amazon is raising its minimum hourly pay for eligible full-time US operations workers by a dollar, taking it to 20 dollars an hour, and adding new banking tools for employees. A fairly straightforward move in a tight labor market for warehouse work.
Elsewhere, OpenAI is testing something it calls Sponsored Agents with select US advertisers, letting ChatGPT users chat directly with business-sponsored agents and click through to advertiser sites. X added a Trade option to its Cashtag feature, letting US users execute trades through brokerages like Interactive Brokers, Coinbase and Kraken without leaving the app. Prediction markets are pushing further into the mainstream, with new partnerships tying them to Dow Jones, Substack, CNN, CNBC and Fox, treating betting markets as a legitimate information channel rather than a novelty.
None of these stories involve a foundation model or a data center, which is exactly why they’re worth noting together. The AI story dominates the headlines this week, as it does most weeks now, but ordinary commerce keeps moving underneath it: wages go up, ad products get tested, trading gets bundled into more apps, and betting markets edge closer to being treated like actual journalism. The economy doesn’t pause for the main story.
